Nothing quite like Sunday morning hate.
Hey, why not just drop the euphemisms? "Gangsta crowd," "certain groups of people," "that element," "them" are all just veiled hints at "black people." Let your racism out. You're all hiding behind anonymous Internet aliases, anyway. Why not just come out of the closet?

Been reading many books wherein people pontificate on their own mortality vis-a-vis addiction, having a kid, or whatever, and I started considering what I'd like to have on my tombstone.
"Feared by millions." "How appropriate. You fight like a cow." "I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter." "There is no problem that can't be solved with a rag and some gasoline."

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean |
] |
When I was in preschool, there was a kid at Kindercare in Lansing who would sing "Beat It" pretty much every day. Unfortunately, he wasn't quite sure of the lyrics, and just sang the words the way he heard them. So, "Showin' how funky strong is your fight" became "Showin' how fuckin' strong is your fight."
He got sent to time out every day for a week because one of the other kids who sat at our table of four kept telling the teacher he was "using the eff word!" They finally figured out what he was saying and gently corrected him, and explained what "funky" meant.
Oh, and the best comments about his death thus far: * My grandmother: "How many people can say Michael Jackson wrote/sang a multi-$$$ song just for them? Billie Jean of course!" * Misty Nuckolls: "A friend of my husband's suggested that this was simply a lead-up to the release of 'Thriller 2.' I'll certainly be watching the funeral, if it's televised or webcast, waiting for that zombie hand to punch through the coffin and the guests to start stagger-dancing. As Trey said, Andy Kaufman will have to show up, if only to do the 'Citizen Cane' clap."

Burt Bacharach - The Blob |

Three fairly major dead celebrities in one week.
Wow.
I've been a busy blogger boy over at Wayward Blog, which usually results in me wanting to do as little typing as possible at the end of the day. Quite honestly, all I really want to do anymore is watch TV and read comic books, although I'm unsure as to whether or not that's the work or the heat.
The blogging is fun, and productive, and far more rewarding than I thought it would be. The "scheduled post" function on Movable Type is giving me issues today, though. I'm feeling quite unprofessional and need to pay better attention, because I keep accidently posting things 12 hours ago instead of 12 hours from now.
Other than that, I'm pretty sure Sunglasses After Dark is going to turn into a novelty program for the rest of the summer, because I'd rather listen to stuff like the theme to The Blob than blast punk for two hours straight. Nobody's calling anyway, so I might as well have fun with it.

Thanks to the awful weather, I have no desire to go out tonight. I'd said I was going to cover the Lions / Old Black show at the Replay, but I've really got no desire to leave the house again.

Working in the yard, digging up sod for the path we're working to put in gave me heat stroke. This, along with yelling at my wife, makes two stupid things I've done today.
The former doesn't make up for the latter, but they both certainly make me look like an ass.

SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK
TONIGHT! 8-10PM! PUNK, GARAGE, & ROCKABILLY!
LISTEN TO IT ON KJHK 90.7FM OR STREAM IT ONLINE
SAME TIME! NEW RECORDS! SAME HOST!
LOTS and LOTS of new stuff. I've been busy spending my graduation money. Although, honestly--I am really tired from mowing the lawn and just having a generally stressful sort of day, and despite the fact that there is a ton of new music that I am going to to enjoy rocking, I'd really prefer to sit on the couch and read comics. Or sit in bed and watch House. Either way, I could be sitting somewhere, being entertained rather than entertaining, and eating gummy bears.

Closed the door (while leaving it open a crack for the possibility of something else down the road) over at nuthouseblog. It was kind of sad. I'm gonna miss Rock Star Journalist. I'll keep the webhosting and domain name for it, same as I do for the Nuthouse, but it feels like I just ended a chapter of my life.
It got me the job at The Pitch, and that's super awesome, because it pretty much fulfilled a boyhood dream, but still - a comment like this damn near breaks my heart:
"aww....you need to keep posting. you've like, died. it makes me sad. i like this place. D=

The A/C is broken. We figured it was something to do with the fan, being as how everything else would get going, and then right when the fan would normally kick in, you'd just hear this weird whirring noise coming from within the bowels of our HVAC unit. The gentleman from the repair service confirmed this, and went on to further explain that it was specifically the control unit that controlled the variability of the fan's speed. It was a very expensive piece of equipment. It's hot, so I told him, "Yes, please, dear God, please fix it."
He went to go get the part, and I realized that we are post-vacation, pre-paycheck, and completely unable to pay for it. Several phone calls with the_lucky_nun, Tenants to Homeowners, and Cloud Heating & Cooling later, and we've come up with a plan: we write them a check, they hold it until Friday, and TTH will reimburse us for half the repairs from the maintenance fund into which we pay.
This had me all smiling and happy until the guy comes back, hooks up the control unit and... nothing. Seems that it is, in fact, the motor, which is $15 more than the control unit, but a part which requires being ordered. Hopefully, they can overnight it and get this fixed tomorrow. Otherwise... oh, God, who knows?
At this point in the week, there is a distinct possibility that it might not get here until Monday. I hope for tomorrow, can handle Friday, and Monday might result in a complete mental breakdown. Seriously, box fans can only do so much. My nerves are frazzled, it's too hot to cook, and I'm starving and mildly dehydrated, to say nothing of being unable to think straight enough to write or do much of anything.

When there is a sign that says "Left lane closed ahead" and you immediately speed up to get right up where the lane ends, you're a total douchebag.
Today is just suck suck suck. A/C's not working, so we've got to get that fixed tomorrow. Groceries were purchased, along with sundry other stuff, so I'm now broke. This is to say nothing of having to start paying my student loans soon.
Last night was fun, tho'. I'm exhausted, and depending on what the_lucky_nun has for this afternoon, I might take me a nice long nap.

So, being as how I worked today, and I'm probably going over to the Annex tonight, I'd say things are back to normal. However, seeing as how I'm now writing for Wayward Blog and Tony's pretty much gone Sunday night to Friday afternoon, I'm not quite sure what "normal" is.
I've been so used to having to work stuff out for the station and having meetings all the time that this new schedule is taking some getting used to. My afternoons pretty much consist of writing and reading while I watch sci-fi / horror flicks (today has been The Blob and Fiend Without A Face).
Not a bad schedule, but I really need to figure out what I'm writing about when. Otherwise, it's going to be a little hurley-burley until then. When I'm out tonight, I'm gonna make sure to get a wipe-off board for the basement. It'll be way easier to figure out what I've got going on when I don't have to keep track of it in my head.

There are frighteningly many pictures on my camera. I probably should have cleaned them out at the end of each day, but with so much going on, it wasn't at the top of my things to do list.
There are also videos that I'll throw up on YouTube sometime this week. Expect weird animatronic stuff from House On the Rock, as well as the otters at Shedd Aquarium. Frankly, I could have watched the otters all day.
Pictures will come as I figure out a way to upload them without it taking me the better part of an afternoon.

House On the Rock is creepy, weird, a little frightening, amazing, and everything I'd hoped it would be. If nothing else, the Infinity Room and the LIFE-SIZE whale vs. giant squid statue were worth it. LIFE-SIZE, people. Seriously, pictures don't do anything at House On the Rock justice. It's a place to be experienced.

We also hiked up a bluff at Devil's Lake, sweated far too much, explored downtown Baraboo, explored the grocery store / liquor store next to our hotel, and just had a GREAT day.

Damn - we walked something like 6 miles today. Two art museums - the Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The MCA had an amazing exhibition by Olafur Eliasson that had me giggling like an excited five year-old the entire time we were there. It dealt with perspective, and just blew my mind. There was also a great Buckminster Fuller thing that took up the entire top floor, and made me realize the man was both a visionary and mild crank.
We art people, evidently.
There was also the Lego store (smaller than I expected), the Hancock Observatory (fun, even if slightly foggy still), and some fun food at Wow Bao (we need one of these in Lawrence). I am totally stuffed. We've been doing it up a little too much at meals, rather than doing it properly. Some of these meals could have been far better, if we'd just stuck to less food.

Aside from deep dish our first night here, we've pretty much been eating Mexican or diner food.
Sorry, Midwest - you cannot provide the tacos which I have come to prefer.
Oh, and we had Thai food. In Dekalb. It was pretty good. We've yet to have one of those "ohmygod" dinners, but plenty of satisfactory meals that left us full and happy. The guac at Zapatista came close to transcendent. They make it from scratch, to order. There's a guy will a little stand where he chops everything and mixes it. If the chips had been like La Parilla's, it would have been amazing. They used storebought. Suck.
Museums are fun, if a little overwhelming at this point. We've hit all the big ones. No art museums yet, and probably not to come. We're not really art people.
It would also behoove us to make phone calls. Too many disappointments thus far with places that either no longer exist or have had changed hours and un-updated websites. We've wasted time and shoe leather pounding the pavement only to find that some place was closed or, worse, gone completely. We got a little cranky, but made the best of it and moved on.
Tomorrow's our last day. We're hitting John Hancock and the Water Tower, and then wandering around in malls. Why? There's a Lego store, that's why! Then on to Wisconsin on Wednesday.
I can't believe we're only halfway done. This is wonderful.

We were going to stay at a Travelodge here in Davenport. There were roaches crawling on the door.
We got a refund and are now at the Baymont. We should be in Chicago by noonish tomorrow, barring any serious sleeping in or long lines at Cracker Barrel.

"Planning for the future" means I'm trying to figure out what I should write about tomorrow for Wayward Blog, what I should play on KJHK during tomorrow's free form shift (8am-noon), and making sure I get enough sleep to be able to get to Dale & Ron's, drop off the car to get the AC recharged, and make it to KJHK in time for said free form shift.
I also need to allow time for getting coffee / caffeinated beverage of some sort.
Probably ought to get off the computer, because my parents are showing up with pizza at some point. More to come later tonight as I get wired on too much Mountain Dew and watch House DVDs in a frantic search to find something worth checking out on various news feeds.
